Who is STEM Nerds?

STEM Nerds is a fun and exciting program to introduce young nerdy brains to the amazing world of
Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths.

Tokkie is a graduate from the School of Agriculture, with a love for science who wants to remove the stigma associated with science and encourage children to learn more and hopefully fall in love with the sciences.

More often than not, the fields of STEM are misunderstood and avoided.

We set out on a journey of exploration based on our crazy planet Earth, having a day for EVERYTHING!

The Nerds program utilises these celebratory days to introduce the Scientific Method to young brains in an age appropriate manner.

The Nerds Scientific Journal will be published termly and includes individual work done as well as information on what happened in class.

Our classes

STEM Nerds classes are presented weekly at a time and place as agreed upon with the school.
Aprons, consumables and equipment will be supplied by the Nerds facilitator. Class duration is a 30 minutes presentation and 15 minutes for set-up and cleaning.

The Scientific Method

Using the scientific method regularly will teach the STEM Nerds to look at all the evidence before making a statement of fact, which makes it an integral part of any STEM program.
This process will look different for the various age groups.

STEM Nerds introduces and explores by asking, investigating and answering questions. Applying hands-on methods to illustrate and discover how and why things happen. Methods include construction, experiments, audio and visual aids.

STEM Explained

Science

The systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation.

Technology

The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry such as machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.

Engineering

The branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures.

Maths

The science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations and abstractions.

What are the benefits for my child?
Your child will be exposed to multiple STEM fields using the scientific method. This will expand their general knowledge while teaching critical thinking.
What is the scientific method?
The scientific method is an empirical method for acquiring knowledge that has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century. It involves careful observation and applying rigorous scepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation.
What is the number of participants in the class?

Classes are limited to 15 nerds, unless specified otherwise.

In what language will the class be presented?

English and Afrikaans.
